He served as a reservist of the Naval Security Group from 1970-1994 and retired with a total of 28 years of military service and an area of expertise in Communications Analyst and Cryptology.

Fred graduated from Trinity University in 1972 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree with a double major in Economics and Political Science.

Fred’s professional career in higher education began at the University of Texas at San Antonio began in May 1973 where he stayed until his retirement in August 2019, a period of over 46 years. His many positions at UTSA included Senior Clerk, Assistant to the Director of Admissions and Registrar, Assistant Registrar, Associate Registrar, Director of Downtown Registrar’s Office Operations, Executive Director of Student Affairs Operations Downtown Campus, and Executive Director of Veterans Certification Office.

Fred describes how when he was hired at UTSA in June of 1973, it was enrolling its inaugural class, there was one campus with an enrollment of approximately 630 students which has grown to over 34,000 students enrolled at UTSA in Fall 2022.

Fred attributes part of his success and longevity at UTSA to TACRAO and the knowledge he gained, the professional development opportunities and support he experienced through the organization.  He describes the evolution from paper, filing cabinets, electric typewriters and copiers in the 1970s, to batch processing, data entry, transactional-based record keeping, and pin-fed printing forms, to integrated student information systems in the 1980s, and in the 1990s and 2000s to more centralized transactional services. Fred recognizes that TACRAO has addressed these and many other issues which allowed us to succeed in our individual careers by providing the best outcomes for our students and our universities.

Fred’s involvement in TACRAO has spanned four decades, where he has attended more than 20 annual TACRAO conferences, has served as a recorder, presented conference sessions, served on three Local Arrangements Committees and participated in SPEEDE and Apply Texas. His TACRAO membership has also provided opportunities for participation in SACRAO and AACRAO leadership roles and conference presentations.

In his retirement, Fred plans to visit his grandchildren who live in Pennsylvania, and other family from Maine. He has enrolled in on-line courses with COURSERA, EDX and Yale On-Line and continues to be a voracious reader with an interest in the future of higher education, economic policy and political issues.

Please join me in recognizing and welcoming Fred Hample as a new TACRAO Honorary Member.
